since moving east one year ago, i’ve fallen in love with the old fashioned and historic architecture of this coast. the row houses that litter DC remind me of my favorite childhood book: “the big orange splot.” the book tells the story of a neighborhood where all the houses look the same. one family decides to stand out, and paints a big orange splot on the roof of their home. they continue to build upon the color, until their entire house is covered in designs, and the other neighbors follow suit, bringing a whole new life to the neighborhood.
these row houses aren’t quite as crazy as that, but i love how two houses, identical in architecture, can differentiate themselves with a simple paint job.
